This year we as a family decided to start homeschooling our daughter Charlotte. As this is our first year and as a former teacher myself I started to figure out what will our philosophy be for this year. What will be important to us as we learn and grow together?
As I thought about it and asked Mama Mary I discovered what three important things I wanted to focus on: faith, family, and wonder.
1. Faith
An aspect so important in our daily lives and as a Catholic I want my children to see that God has blessed us and loves us more than anything we can get in this world. The Eucharist- the pinnacle thing in our life that should be our utmost focus and be what we shape our lives around. One of my favorite saints: Saint Benedict had such a wonderful rule: Ora et labora (pray and work). It is a motto I want my kids to learn and live by. Work can look like so many different things but it’s ultimately loving God with your actions. A few things we will do are go to daily Mass at least twice a week and to pray one decade of the rosary together.
2. Family
This became our second aspect of our philosophy because family is so important. I know we hear that all the time but God when he created us picked our parents specifically. Even though my life was a huge cross I had to bear I still want my children to grow up in a loving and caring family. A family who plays and prays. A family who builds their house on the rock of God. During the school year we will go on family trips and spend intentional time together even in simple ways such as family dinners or walks around the block.
3. Wonder
Wonder was the last pillar of why we have chosen to do homeschooling. When I think of wonder I think of in awe or full of curiosity. I want my children to be curious about the world around them. I want them to ask questions and to explore what gifts and talents God gave them. I want them to see how truly “beautifully and wonderfully made “they are. I believe sometimes as mothers we need to say what God would say to us which is you are “beautifully and wonderfully made”.
